The Work of William Orpen & his Contemporaries
William Orpen was an extraordinary artistic talent, winning medals and prizes at a very early age. We look at some of the iconic images he created throughout his life and we discuss some of Orpen’s mesmerising portraits, that often present the viewer with a colourful insight into the sitter’s personality.
We consider also some of the haunting images Orpen painted during WWI and focus on the beautiful paintings he created of his wife Grace, his children and, of course, his many lovers. At the same time, we contemplate some of the masterpieces by Orpen’s contemporaries such as Jack Butler Yeats, John Lavery and Roderic O’Conor.
