Artist: Stephanie Cushing
Stephanie has exhibited in over 40 exhibitions nationally since 2014, including Kew Gardens, Hampton Court Flower Show, Aldous Gallery, Delamore Arts and Cotswold Sculpture Park. Her work is held in private collections in the UK and abroad and she is also a Freelance Exhibition Curator.
After a career in the Civil Service, Stephanie came to art as a mature student, beginning her creative career with ceramics and progressing to stone. Her work is mostly abstract, concentrating on shape and form. Originally working with softer limestone where inspiration was derived from natural forms, in particular sensuous shapes of fruits and seeds, she then fell in love with marble. Her early work explored the fluidity of the marble, aiming to make it appear malleable and pliable as if it had been gently coaxed and twisted into shape. Each new piece tends to be a progression from the last and is a test of herself, her skills and the marble. Challenging herself to work with it thinner and finer, Stephanie pushes herself and the material to its limits.
Stephanie works mostly with Carrara marble, exploiting its whiteness and enhancing the translucency and light-reflecting qualities. Her pieces are quiet, serene and meditative, both in contrast to and reflecting the processes they have undergone. They exhibit a perfect smooth and sometimes polished surface that begs to be caressed and stroked.
